Be Prepared When Working Outside

Just a few words to prepare you for working outdoors if you've never done it before.

- Make sure your tetanus shots are up to date.

- Wear comfortable old clothing that you don't mind getting dirty/torn.

- Wear a pair of sturdy shoes or preferably boots.

- Take a waterproof jacket and trousers with you.

- In the warmer months be sure to wear a hat to protect you from the sun. Also remember to take sun screen with you and re-apply it regularly. The best protection against the sun is to cover up.

- Also during the summer months take insect repellent with you - they can be VERY annoying.

- Take plenty of water to drink, especially in summer (you need to drink more than you think)

- Take plenty of food with you - there's nothing worse than having rumbly tummy in the middle of nowhere.

- First aid kits don't usually have pain killers or plasters in them any more. Take your own with you in a waterproof box.

- Take a toilet roll / packet of tissues with you, just in case ;-)

- Let the leader of the task know about any medical conditions that they should be aware of.

- Take any medicines that you need with you.

- If the task includes a bonfire, don't leave your gear downwind of it - burning embers can land on it and burn holes in man-made materials used in rucksacks and fleeces etc.

- In the warmer months take precautions against ticks, which can spread Lymes Disease.

- At all times of the year take precautions to protect against Leptospirosis (Weil's Disease)
