Herpetological Conservation Trust - Herpetofauna Surveyors

This is an extremely useful and rewarding way of becoming involved in herpetofauna conservation. Species recording is important both locally on our sites and will be a major contribution to the national monitoring programmes. We can train people in identification and survey techniques and ensure you are properly licensed. Having regular sets of data also provides useful clues as to whether our practical management is working (or not !). For monitoring the sites themselves, we need to know where management work has been done, over what extent, any damage caused by misuse, re-growth of certain plants and changes to the site from our and external influences.

Surveying and monitoring can be field, or desk-based activities and include data input or photographic records. So if you are a budding wildlife and landscape photographer, then this may be the opportunity for you! Contact Graham Stanley if you are interested..

Herpetological Conservation Trust - Volunteer Site Wardens

Staff cannot be on all of the sites all the time. Having an on site presence can be the difference in preventing regular misuse. The HCT wants its wardens to have a real sense of ownership of their designated reserve, to be a contact point within the community and to be willing to help out when the need arises. It can be very satisfying being associated a with nature reserve and knowing that just because you are on site, you are helping conserve a rare and valuable habitat for future generations.

Many of the benefits of volunteering are less tangible such as gaining new knowledge about wildlife and the conservation efforts throughout the country, learning new skills, gaining qualifications meeting people with similar interests and contributing to a leading conservation organisation. Borough of Poole - Volunteer Network

Volunteers wanted - the more the merrier! To sign up to the Poole Council Volunteer Network just requires you to give the Leisure Services Ranger Team your name and address or email address. We will add you to our Network contacts list and you will receive the new events lists (usually twice a year). The events are a great opportunity for learning about Poole’s heaths and other informal sites, as well as meeting new people. As a Volunteer you can get involved as much or as little as you wish. You may wish to come out and help with the practical tasks, or be able to help look after a particular site, encouraging other visitors to use it responsibly. Whichever describes you best, please get in touch and be added to the contacts list. Any contribution you can make is much appreciated and very valuable in helping the Ranger Team look after these important urban habitats. If you decide later that you no longer wish to be on the Network list then you just need to let us know and your contact details can be removed. The sites currently included by the Volunteer Network are: Canford Heath, Bourne Valley (including Talbot Heath), Creekmoor Ponds, Vineyards Copse, Ham Common and Broadstone Heath. Currently Newsletters are only written for Canford Heath, Ham Common and Bourne Valley Nature Reserves, while a range of events are held on a variety of sites across the borough. You can specify a particular area you are interested in or keep it more general, you will then be sent the appropriate information and updates (the information produced varies between sites). Phone: 01202 265265 or e-mail enquiries@poole.gov.uk.

Purbeck District Council - Butterfly and Botanical Surveyors

This summer the Purbeck Keystone Project is looking for volunteers to help with butterfly and plant surveys at sites along the Purbeck Chalk Ridge. To start the survey season, two free training days are being organised to help people improve their identification skills and to learn the survey methodologies for chalk grassland. The Keystone Project is currently working with farmers on the Ridge between Steeple and Nine Barrow Down to help control invasive scrub and encourage conservation grazing to restore this nationally important habitat.

The training days are:-

Butterfly Identification and Recording Workshop Saturday 12th May, 10am – 4pm, Church Knowle Village Hall With tuition from Dorset Butterfly Conservation

Botanical Survey Training Day Saturday 19th May, 10am – 4.30pm, National Trust Study Centre, Knowle Beach With tuition from Dorset Environmental Records Centre.

If you are interested in either of these courses and feel you have the basic skills and available time for 3 or 4 survey visits over the summer, we need your help to collect much needed data for the Project. For more information and to book a place on either of these courses, please contact: Judith Baker or Richard Caldow on 01929 557354 or email keystone@purbeck-dc.gov.uk

Dorset Wildlife Trust - Song Thrush Survey

DWT require your help to map the distribution of this once common, but now rapidly declining bird, in Dorset. For more information on how to take part visit the survey page on the Dorset Wildlife Trust web site.

Dorset County Council - Visitor Monitoring

Dorset County Council are looking for volunteers to help them with visitor monitoring on land Designated as Open Access under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act (CROW) using a Monitoring Toolkit developed by Natural England. They are looking for volunteers to fill in observation forms and to conduct visitor surveys on some beautiful heath and downland sites in Dorset; it would be 3 surveys (each would be up to a 6 hour day) spread across the year - the first one likely to be the end of July or beginning of August, with expenses up to £20 a day, with people working in pairs. Actual dates could be to suit, to some extent, although Saturdays or Sunday would give the most data. The survey is designed to look at access management issues and includes issues to do with visitor behaviour, awareness of access land and dogs. We'd be very grateful even if you can only commit to doing one survey day! - if you're interested please contact Suzie Powner: s.powner@dorsetcc.gov.uk, 01305 228677 or (mobile) 07718 159350.
