Bourne Valley, Poole / Scrub Clearance
Dorset Countryside Volunteers
This Local Nature Reserve covers a heathland valley now hidden within the urban area of Poole. Despite this urban setting, many of the wildlife features that make the Dorset heaths so important can still be found, and the reserve is especially noted for its dragonflies and damselflies. We shall be continuing the work of past tasks, mainly clearing young birch from the heath and maybe some willow on wetter ground near the Bourne stream. This provides open conditions favoured by the heath and fen plants and for those dragons and damsels along the stream and in boggy pools. The birch should be on dryish ground but this can be a wet site so bring wellies just in case. Meet and park at the end of Evering Avenue, Grid Ref: SZ052939 [MAP] nearest post code BH12 4JP. The task site is off St Brelades Avenue – follow DCV signs from parking at Evering Avenue down the slope and back along the valley. Contact Brian Thompson on 01305 889728.

Dorset Countryside Volunteers
This reserve is perched high on the Purbeck limestone that dominates the landscape from the cliffs of Durlston westward to St Alban’s Head. There are wonderful views over Swanage and the bay to the chalk ridge of Ballard Down. Much of the reserve is tightly grazed limestone grassland which, like chalk grassland, is a rich habitat for wildflowers. A speciality is the rare early spider orchid. In places there are thickets of thorny scrub providing useful shelter for breeding birds. These need to be cut back on an occasional basis to keep the grassland and to provide a variety of scrub at different stages of growth. We shall be helping out with our bowsaws and loppers, and no doubt exchanging chat around a hot bonfire. NB: The reserve is very exposed to wind and rain, so wrap up well against the weather. West Moors, East Dorset / Scrub Clearance
Dorset Countryside Volunteers
This is likely to be the first of several tasks helping with the management of the Castleman trailway, a path and cycleway that runs along the old Poole to Ringwood railway. On this occasion we are at West Moors where the trailway skirts alongside an MoD establishment and important quiet area for heathland wildlife. We have been asked to cut out a linear thicket of gorse that is overrunning the trailway in a shallow cutting, smothering heathers and rendering the local reptiles homeless. There is a slight problem though. The MoD site contains mega volumes of petroleum, so one of DCV’s mighty bonfires could be a little risky. We shall be transporting the cut gorse in a trailer east along the trailway to a safe burning site. So some logistic skills will be required on this task. Meet and park in Braeside Road, Grid Ref: SU085030 [MAP] nearest post code BH22 0JS. NB: The meeting place is where the road ends at an MoD security gate. We may have to move to another nearby road connection to the trailway if we don’t get the keys – look out for the instruction board if late. Contact Brian Thompson on 01305 889728.

Michael’s Peace, Toller Whelme, West Dorset / Hedgelaying
Dorset Countryside Volunteers
If you’ve not heard of this place then you’re probably among the vast majority of Dorset’s inhabitants. The hamlet lies snuggled deep within the head of the Hook valley overshadowed by high downs on almost all sides. The only gap is along a narrow lane that winds up the valley bottom. The hamlet posse sses a church, two farms – simply East Farm and West Farm – and just recently a new nature reserve. The reserve covers a few small woods and fields with old fishing ponds and boggy places. Last year was our first visit and we were promised a mix of scrub clearing and hedgelaying. Well, when we got there we found so much scrub that the hedge was barely accessible. Having now cleared much of the scrub we can finally have a go at bringing the laneside hedge into good order by hedgelaying. Along with this challenge, we also still have some excess scrub to cut back and burn. Some of our experienced hedgelayers will be on hand for guidance and by working in pairs it’s easy to pick up the basic skills. Come along and enjoy a wonderfully secluded site and, if last year is to go by, a cacophony of calling pheasants at dusk! Meet & park in field at Grid Ref: ST521009 [MAP] nearest post code DT8 3PE.
