Why Volunteer? There are a number of reasons why people do voluntary nature conservation work, and I've tried to list as many as I can think of below. If there are reasons that you volunteer that aren't listed below, please let me know. You never know, they may inspire others to volunteer. - Volunteering is a great way to make new friends. You will get to meet interesting people from all walks of life who share at least one interest in common with you. - It gives you a chance to make a difference to other individuals and the community. - You can build your confidence by volunteering as you get practice adjusting to new situations, people and experiences. - Volunteering is a good way to improve your personal skills – communication and interpersonal skills, problem-solving, managerial experience, etc. - Volunteering is a good way to find out if a career in nature conservation is for you. If you decide that it is, then volunteering can help you to get the job that you want. It gives you the skills, knowledge and experience that your future employer might need. Many volunteering opportunities include some sort of training, either formal or informal, which can be invaluable to you. Volunteering also proves to a potential employer just how dedicated and committed you are and makes you a serious candidate. - Volunteering is good for your health. It can help to lower your stress levels, strengthen your immune system and help you sleep better. It also gives you plenty of muscular and cardiovascular exercise, and you also get plenty of fresh air and sunshine while doing it. - Volunteering can give you a feeling of self-fulfillment and the knowledge that you have made a difference. - Volunteering can give you a feeling of independence. Many volunteer jobs require you to act independently and take initiative. Such jobs give you a sense of control over your own life - Volunteering can reveal your hidden talents. - Finally, volunteering is FUN! |
